Acupuncture involves small needles inserted into the affected area to relieve pain. See us for acupuncture today!!

Acupuncture originated in China thousands of years ago.  Traditional Chinese Medicine, which includes Acupuncture, is based on energy flow throughout the body (called Qi and pronounced “chee”).  If Qi is disrupted, one is susceptible to illness or dysfunction.

The practice of Anatomical Acupuncture is more comprehensible to the Western mind than the rest of Traditional Chinese Medicine due to the hard work of Dr. Joseph Wong. He researched the pathways of energy flow throughout the body to specific anatomical acupuncture points.  A system was developed for physiotherapists, chiropractors, and medical doctors to incorporate Acupuncture into their practice to give them options for using natural medicine.

Anatomical Acupuncture uses points along meridians (channels throughout the body) to stimulate the proper receptors that are indicated for a specific dysfunction and to improve Qi.  The points chosen are based on the anatomy and physiology of the body. The needles are inserted just below the skin’s surface and are made of smooth stainless steel. They are a very small gauge and will elicit little to no pain when inserted. They will stimulate the body locally, and through signals to the spinal cord and brain.

The general goals of Anatomical Acupuncture are to: reduce pain, reduce inflammation, restore function, normalize balance in the autonomic nervous system, reduce stress/anxiety/depression, promote energy and accelerate tissue healing.

At Boehm’s Physiotherapy, Jessica Penner (B.Sc.PT., B.Sc.Kin., CAFCI), is a physiotherapist certified to practice Anatomical Acupuncture through Acupuncture Canada.  She will do a Physiotherapy assessment and will screen you for your readiness to have acupuncture treatment, as well as address any questions or concerns you may have. If Acupuncture is a good choice for you as part of your plan to better health, a treatment generally takes 20-30 minutes. Sometimes, your health benefits plan will cover Acupuncture separately from Physiotherapy, which is helpful in stretching out your available coverage.
